The Casco Bay Branch YMCA Adaptive Services Program....

...is dedicated to providing inclusion for all
The Casco Bay YMCA's Adaptive Services program is dedicated to ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, is able to enjoy the YMCA to their fullest potential. This commitment ranges from creating specific adaptive programs to simply lending a supportive hand in utilizing the Y's wellness and aquatics facilities. In addition to the physical health benefits, involvement in the YMCA on a regular basis also provides an outlet for peer interaction and support.
...fosters social interaction and well being
In addition to the physical health benefits of involvement at the YMCA, interaction with the Y community also provides an outlet for peer relations and support. Physical limitations can lead to social barriers, by either preventing individuals from physically getting into the community, or by creating a sense of emotional isolation. Physical access comes through Y provided transportation, adaptive equipment and one-on-one support. Social interaction is fostered through group camaraderie, support groups and the nurturing of YMCA staff.
...opens new doors for healthy recreation
Adaptive wellness programming and adaptive sports enable participants to maintain and grow their physical strength, as well as to improve or regain their quality of life. Adaptive sports opportunities include adaptive basketball, bowling, archery, fishing, swimming and snow-shoeing, as well as Unified soccer and floor hockey run in collaboration with the Special Olympics. The YMCA also provides adaptive golf with the first two golf carts specially designed for individuals who utilize a wheelchair to be purchased in Maine.
...is growing to meet the community need
The Adaptive Services program currently serves nearly 300 people, a number that grows to 400 when multiple program participation is included. This is double the size of the program just two years ago. Volunteer drivers transport participants from as far north of the YMCA in Freeport as Lisbon and as far south as Kennebunk. The need is obvious, and continues to grow.
